Liberal Democrats launch survey to protect community assets

Local Liberal Democrat councillors this weekend launched a survey which is part of a new campaign designed to help local residents protect their local community buildings, parks, open spaces and heritage from future development.

The Localism Act 2011 provides local people with the opportunity to nominate assets of community value that, once agreed, would give the community a first chance to buy the asset if it was put up for sale or redevelopment.

Fortis Green councillors Sophie Erskine and Martin Newton, pictured outside one potential community asset Cranwood residential home, have put forward some suggestions of community assets in their ward and are asking local residents to add other assets.

Cllr Sophie Erskine (Fortis Green) comments:

“We think that protecting our community buildings and open spaces is important. We have already made an initial list of buildings and areas that we are thinking of nominating as assets of community value in Fortis Green.

“Our survey is designed to ask local residents to tell us if they agree with what assets we think the local community depends on, and to get residents to tell us their ideas for what they could nominate.”

Cllr Martin Newton (Fortis Green) adds:

“We have until April to compile a list of community assets that we want to nominate. I hope as many people as possible take part in the survey and together we propose a list of assets to protect the buildings, open spaces and areas that are at the heart of our community.

“Cranwood is a good example of a community asset which as a care home for the elderly has provided a precious service for local residents. With an ageing population this is just the kind of asset we will need more of, rather than less. This Council run residential home is already under threat and it would be a great shame if the local community did not have an option to try to keep this service for the future.”
